Story

I started my first One Hundred Hats Challenge in 2021 by doing 100 openwater swims wearing a different hat each time. I had great fun, made new friends and raised money for Surrey Young Carers and Alzheimer's Research UK.

I have decided to embark upon Another One Hundred Hats Challenge, this time doing 100 Park Runs wearing a different hat each time. By the way, I HATE running, so this will be even more challenging for me than the swimming!

I work in a school where we have a number of young carers. Caring for a family member can have a huge impact on a young person and I wanted to support a local charity that provides them with tangible, practical help, and a chance to have fun with other youngsters in a similar situation.

There are 115,000 unpaid carers in Surrey looking after someone who couldn't manage without them. Caring can be extremely isolating and can take its toll - it can affect all aspects of life. Action for Carers provides support by phone, through face-to-face meetings, support groups and workshops. We help with benefits advice, advocacy, give practical help and provide a wealth of information and free events.

"I had been signposted to so many dead ends, Action for Carers and Surrey Young Carers have been the first to offer real help and understanding."

About the charity

Surrey Young Carers is a service of Action for Carers Surrey. We support young people under 18 who care emotionally or physically for an adult or sibling with a long term illness, disability or drug and alcohol misuse.
