Story

I’m not someone who buries their head in the sand—or in this case, the trees—but I can’t stand by while the world’s forests are destroyed. Especially the rainforests. These beautiful, wild, untamed landscapes are brimming with life in ways no human could ever replicate. And yet, we treat them as disposable—plundering them for profit and tearing them apart in the name of ‘progress.’
Why is it so hard to grasp that rainforests are worth infinitely more alive than as smouldering stumps?
I’ve just returned from the Guyanas—British Guiana (as it was), Suriname, and French Guiana—where the forests still stand. 83.5%, 93%, 98% intact. But they are teetering on the edge. Oil has been discovered. A boom or a bane? Logging, mining, and slash-and-burn agriculture are advancing. And an even bigger threat looms—Guyana is being hailed as the future ‘breadbasket of the Caribbean,’ a plan that could see vast tracts of rainforest bulldozed for industrial-scale farming.
Guyana sits at the northern tip of South America and forms the Guiana Shield with five other countries—an eco-region of global significance. It holds 18% of the world’s tropical forest carbon and 20% of its fresh water. Protecting it isn’t just about saving trees - it’s about safeguarding the planet’s future.
This region is home to incredible wildlife—caimans, sloths, parrots, armadillos, jaguars, giant anteaters, monkeys, and more. But it’s also home to the indigenous Wapichan people, who have been guardians of the forest for generations.
