Story
Ready or not, I am running the Rannoch half marathon in just over a week's time. I have decided to raise money for a wonderful local charity which was set up following the loss of a close friend and helps young people struggling with mental health issues.
Ewen was a wonderfully warm, loyal and kind friend with an adventurous spirit and a love of the wild. Whatever the adventure we shared, be it the 'Hogwarts Express' train ride back to school, cycling the outer hebrides, rafting the river Nevis or dancing on the tables in the local pub Ewen would be at the centre of it all making everyone laugh with his 'silly walks' and and impressions. Thats how I remember him - as the life and soul of the party.
But unbeknownst to those around him Ewen was silently struggling with schizophrenia and tragically took his own life at the age of 29. This charity was set up in his memory to offer support to young people experiencing difficulties as a result of mental health issues as well as raise awareness of mental health issues.
Many years prior to the 'Rannoch Marathon' being made an 'official event', it was an annual school event for us. Some schools had sports days, we had marathons and 40 milers! Along with some school friends I am taking a trip down memory lane to see if we can still hack the pace! Although I will never be as fit as I was when I was 12, the memories of Ewen and his funny stories will keep me pushing on to the finish line!
