Story

In 1993 my family (husband and I and 3 small children) went to live and work in Nepal for 7 years

We worked with Nepal Leprosy Trust and lived at the hospital built by NLT for most of our time there. We returned to the UK in 2000 (having had a 4th child). My husband still works for the charity in the UK office and visits most years. The work of NLT is still close to my heart and I visit when I can and am pleased to fundraise every year.

Here's some more information. Please look at the website to see the many ways that donations are used for people affected by leprosy in Nepal.

Nepal Leprosy Trust (NLT) is a Christian initiative, established in 1972 to serve the neediest people of Nepal by providing services to those affected by leprosy. Leprosy is a chronic, infectious disease. Affected people are marginalised and suffer continual psychological, as well as physical, distress. The disease is strongly linked to poverty and those who contract leprosy are often tipped from poverty into extreme poverty very quickly.

These days leprosy can be cured simply and cheaply through multi-drug therapy. Eradication of the disease worldwide is now a realistic goal.

NLT built and operates the Lalgadh Leprosy Hospital & Services Centre, the only major leprosy services centre in southeast Nepal, the area of the country with the highest prevalence of leprosy

Although the work has grown over the years, it has maintained a warm 'family' spirit through close friendships, and a vision shared by its Nepali and expatriate workers.

NLT is committed to working with people affected by leprosy in all its programmes. It provides training to its Nepali staff, many of whom come from families affected by leprosy. The working ethos aims to preserve the dignity of all those served.
