한 달 전부터 저는 프랑스 북부 칼레라는 도시에서 매일 빨래를 하며 지내고 있습니다. 빨랫감 수거부터, 세탁기에 넣고 빨래를 돌리고, 건조된 빨래를 고이 개서 돌려드리는 것이 제 일과입니다.

저희 빨랫방을 이용하시는 분들은 저희 주변에 흔히 볼 수 있는 분들과 다를 바 없습니다. 어린아이들은 그림책에 색칠을 하는 것을 좋아하고, 10대 후반과 20대 친구들은 공을 차면서 놉니다. 음악을 크게 틀어 춤을 추기도 하고, 나누어 같이 먹자고 제게 음식을 건네기도 합니다. 그리고 이분들은, 더 나은 미래를 위해 누구보다 큰 노력을 하고 있습니다.

갑자기 프랑스까지 가서 빨랫방에 취직했냐고요? 그건 아니고요, 이곳 칼레에 있는 Collective Aid라는 NGO에서 자원봉사를 하고 있습니다. 사실 겉으로는 우리와 다를 게 없어 보이는 이 손님들은, 시리아, 아프가니스탄, 예멘, 수단, 에리트리아 등의 나라에서 전쟁과 박해를 피해, 우리는 상상조차 할 수 없이 힘든 길을 거쳐 이곳까지 오신 분들입니다. 여기서조차 경찰에 쫓기고 대중의 멸시를 받으며 지내고 있는 이분들께 저희 단체는 최소한의 존엄성과 안녕을 지킬 수 있도록 옷을 빨아 드리고, 텐트를 나누어 드리고 있습니다.

먹을 음식, 추위와 비를 피해 잠을 청할 방 등 평소에 제가 당연하게 생각하며 누렸던 것들이 누구에겐 매일매일 간절한 소망인 것을 보며 제가 얼마나 복 받은 삶을 살아왔는지 돌아보게 됩니다. 이분들을 위해 제가 해드릴 수 있는 것이 고작 빨래를 해 드리는 것 뿐이라는게 무기력함을 줄 때도 있지만, 그래도 그분들께서 진심 어린 눈으로 감사의 말씀을 해주실 때 보람 아닌 보람을 느끼곤 합니다.

Collective Aid는 공적 지원을 받지 않고 100% 사적 자금으로 운영되고 있습니다. 난민분들께 지속적인 도움을 드릴 수 있도록 여러분들의 도움의 손길이 절실합니다. 오는 6월 23일 일요일, Collective Aid는 "Walk the Fence"라는 후원 행사를 진행합니다. 전 현직 자원봉사자들이 칼레에서 벨기에까지 65km를 걷는 행사인데, 저는 아쉽게도 그 전에 서울로 돌아가게 되어서 현지에서 참여하진 못합니다. 하지만, 저처럼 칼레에 직접 가지 못하는 전 자원봉사자들이 세계 각지에서 걸으며 원격으로 참여하기로 했는데, 저도 6월 23일 서울에서 65km를 걸을 예정입니다. 작은 금액이라도 마음을 보태 주시면 감사하겠습니다.

For over a month now, my life has revolved around laundry. My day starts with collecting dirty clothes to be washed, then I put them through the washing and drying machines, fold up warm and dry clothes, before finally returning them to their owners.

The people whose clothes I wash every day are no different to those we meet in our every day lives. The children love drawing and colouring books, the teenagers and young adults are always having a kickaround, sometimes they dance to music, and sometimes they offer to share their food. And they are doing all they can for their future.

No, my career path has not taken such a sharp U-turn to working in a launderette. I am volunteering with a grassroots NGO called Collective Aid in Calais, France, where we try to do the little we can for the dignity and wellbeing of vulnerable people fleeing conflict and persecution, from war-torn places such as Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan and Eritrea, by washing their clothes and distributing tents. It has been an eye-opening experience for me, to see people desperately yearning for things I have always taken for granted, like food, a roof over my head, clothes to wear, etc.

Collective Aid does not receive any public funding, and function 100% on private funds. On Sunday 23rd June, I will be taking part in the "Walk the Fence" initiative, walking 65km around Seoul, to support Collective Aid financially and to raise awareness about the issue.
