Ten years ago, on the evening of my 40th birthday, I was sworn in by a Judge to begin my service as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children in Foster Care. As I approach my 50th birthday I have been reflecting on the life changing lessons and experiences I have gained in my role as an Advocate.

This past decade, I’ve supported 8 children in 4 different cases. What started out as a devotion to protecting and championing kids in the foster care system, has pushed me to continuously learn, challenge my beliefs, and become braver in standing up in contentious situations. It has been the honor of my life to represent the child’s voice in the courtroom; support their day-to-day lives by connecting them to resources and opportunities; and tirelessly advocate for the welfare of vulnerable families.

For my 50th birthday, and 10 year anniversary of becoming a CASA, in lieu of birthday gifts, I am inviting my friends and family to support the Mission of CASA: To improve the outcomes for children in foster care through community volunteers that advocate for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse and neglect.
