Story
In February we (Amanda, Karen, Nicky, Ros, Colin, Alison, Sarah, David, Jerry and Isobel) are traveling to Delhi to volunteer for Asha, an Indian NGO that has been working in the slums of Delhi for over 33 years.
Asha, which means “hope” in Hindi, strives to improve the infrastructure of the community, empowers and trains women, educates the children and young people and offers healthcare to all. It works with people of all backgrounds, caste, faith and ethnicity to promote dignity, acceptance, justice and help people reach their potential. Through its Higher Education Programme over 3000 students from the slum communities have studied at Delhi University and now the first two Asha graduates are studying for their PhD’s. This is just a small example of the remarkable way they are changing lives and lifting whole families out of poverty.
We will be working in the Asha centre in Seelampur slum to help serve the community as best we can. We will be doing games and craft with the kids, English with the students, serving meals to the elderly and redecorating the centre by painting murals in the classrooms. We will also be visiting the Riverbed community nearby, which was recently devasted by terrible flash floods, causing many of the families there to lose everything. For further information on the work of Asha, please visit www.asha-india.org
We are fundraising to raise £5000 as a team to support Asha’s work transforming the lives of some of the poorest of the poor. The money will be sent to India direct via Friends of Asha (GB). If you are a UK tax-payer, please remember to gift-aid your donation, so your money goes even further.
