In memory of Cavan Taylor
Prisoners Education Trust is a national charity aiming to extend and enrich the educational opportunities available to prisoners, providing them with a chance to build a better and more constructive future for themselves, their family and their community.

Story

Cavan Taylor died, surrounded by his family, in the late afternoon on Thursday, 8th May, 2025, at the age of 90.

He will be remembered for his career as a lawyer, latterly as Senior Partner of Lovell White Durrant. And for, twice, serving as Chair of the Governors of Kings College School, Wimbledon.

Above all, he was devoted to his family. He cared for his late wife, Helen, for 38 years, following a stroke. She defied all medical expectations, sustained by his love.

While possessing all the reasoning skills required in the legal world, Cavan had a rare gift for bringing both heart and mind to his deeper judgements. He was a wise friend to his children and grandchildren – and to many.

In his final years, despite multiple health conditions and frailties, Cavan’s innate optimism, sense of humour, and insistence on putting others first, ensured he remained good company alongside his ‘colleagues’ and nurses in his care home.

Even into his final weeks, he would tell the doctors he felt ‘very well’.

Cavan’s warm presence and generosity of spirit remained evident throughout. Family, friends and visitors were greeted with joy and kindness – and invariably departed in better spirits.

Cavan loved trees, sunflowers, birds and rugby.

He was interested in everyone.

In his retirement, Cavan continued his work in education, as a committed and passionate supporter of Prisoners’ Education Trust. He served as a Committee Member of the South London Group, where he was an active fund-raiser and event organizer.

Please consider donating to Prisoners’ Education Trust in memory of Cavan.

Cassie Edmiston, Head of Fundraising and External Affairs, Prisoner’s Education Trust:

Prisoners’ Education Trust (PET) believes that everyone in prison, wherever they are and whatever their background, should have access to education. We offer distance learning courses, advice and guidance and help around 1,500 learners each year to study. Not only does our support help to reduce reoffending and increase the chances of getting a job on release, it also improves wellbeing, provides a positive focus for the long hours in cell, and can help to reconnect families. One learner studying a health and safety course recently told PET:

“I just want to say thank you for the opportunity to learn and gain an education. I left school at the age of 11 as I was bullied […] and I was always told I will never amount to nothing. PET has given me hope for a brighter future and a real chance of making something of myself and making my little girl proud of her Dad. Thank you so much.”
