Story
Alzheimer’s Society is working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives.
My dad and Ben's grandad, Alex Royle, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in the spring of 2020. The formal diagnosis was simply confirmation of what we - and he - knew was happening to him. He was a dedicated, intelligent and hardworking man who was devoted to his family: he was a loving and thoughtful husband, father and grandfather. By early December that same year, he had passed away. Three years later, his wife Barbara - my mum, Ben's grandma - was diagnosed with combined Alzheimer's Disease and vascular dementia. Mum is still happy and healthy, living in residential care in the town she and Dad made their home in 2019 when they moved to live close to us. We are incredibly fortunate that her care home is staffed by a phenomenal, dedicated team with great expertise in the field of dementia.
By giving help and support to those living with dementia today; ongoing research; and dedication to finding a solution and an end to this cruel and devastating disease, Alzheimer's Society is providing hope for the future.
Ben and I want to raise as much money as we can to donate to Alzheimer's Society. We will be running the Cambridge Flaming June Half Marathon on 7th June and the Royal Parks Half Marathon in London on 11th October.
Please support us and the Alzheimer's Society! THANK YOU.
