Story
After finding my journey into motherhood quite challenging and suffering from post natal depression and psychosis, I have a lot of empathy for new parents. I was lucky enough to be cared for by the most incredible team of people, and I want to give back and contribute to the on going research and support that is so invaluable for people who are struggling with motherhood.
There is a lot of stigma and pressure on new mums, from baby groups to social media, and this is my stepping stone in doing something about it. I felt too scared to open up about my own struggles of fear that somebody might deem me unfit to care for my baby. The mental health side of being a new mother is so much more complexed than just not feeling bonded to your child, it can manifest into a abundance of different thoughts and emotions, and everyone deals with things differently.
As a hairdresser I have a complete soft spot for any mother who sits in my chair because I know the struggles that come with that, and I adore caring for these people and giving them a wonderful experience where they feel cared for, for a few hours, and get to leave feeling a little bit like their old self.
Finally I am in a really positive place with my journey becoming a parent, and although it is hugely challenging at times, I am able to manage my mental health and enjoy running around after my crazy toddler. This led me to try and see what I can do to give back and challenge myself to something massively out of my comfort zone. I will be kept comfortably motivated whilst doing this half marathon knowing it will be benefiting new parents and families that are struggling the same way I did.
Much appreciated for donating anything you can, thank you so so much.
