The Great Tommy Sleepout 2024 · 1 March 2024 to 31 March 2024 ·

It's cold, it's dark, it's wet. Can you last the night? During the month of March, we are challenging you to join The Great Tommy Sleep Out. Sleep outside for one night to fund raise for RBLI and raise awareness for homeless ex-servicemen and women.

Story

I am swapping my bed for a sleeping bag to raise vital funds and awareness for over 6000 veterans that are experiencing homeless in the UK right now.

With every penny raised, Royal British Legion Industries can provide safe, warm housing and ensure everyone has a fair opportunity to gain employment, regardless of health conditions or disability.

Please help me to raise much needed funds for this great cause

Time for a personal story and a bit of background as to why I've chosen this charity!

When I was homeless I frequented Dene Court (Two Saints) which is a shelter for the homeless and they gave you the opportunity to spend a night indoors and out of the weather, they would give you a camping bed and sleeping bag and you would bed down in the dining room or office space for the night before returning to the streets in the morning.

One night I met an ex army sniper (Paul and his 3 legged dog called Sam) Paul was discharged from the army because he became Epileptic and suffered PTSD after a couple of tours of Iraq. He ended up on the streets after losing his job and his marriage broke down, this guy looked out for me and I soon started looking out for him as he use to fit in the night we became good friends as time went on I managed to get offered a Bed sit and a few weeks later Paul got a room in a local sheltered accommodation building......unfortunately after a few weeks Paul struggled to adjust to being in the sheltered accommodation and took his own life 😪 the man left a lasting impression on me and I am grateful and privileged to have known him, he kept me safe and sane despite all of his issues and demons... this is my opportunity to give back and support not only the Veterans that have found themselves on the street but also to say thank you and remember a good friend called Paul 😔
