Story
Hi! My name is Kashmala and I’m 17 years old. Ever since I was four, swimming has been a huge part of my life — what started as a fun hobby has grown into a deep passion, and I now work as a lifeguard and I’m aiming to swim 2 miles for Migrants’ Rights Network in the Swim Serpentine Event on the 20th September in Hyde Park.
My awareness of social justice, especially around migrants’ rights, has been shaped by my family and background. My cousin has worked at Migrants Rights’ Network for over eight years and has always inspired me with her commitment to raising awareness and educating others about the discrimination faced by migrants in our society.
Coming from a South Asian background, with both of my parents having immigrated to the UK, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges that migrants and People Of Colour can face — including mistreatment and inequality. These experiences have shaped my perspective and made me deeply passionate about inclusion, equality, and speaking up for those whose voices are often overlooked. Their values also align with mine, where they believe in the power of alliance and solidarity.
