Kat's fundraiser for LAM Action

Kat Johnstone is raising money for LAM Action

25k trail run · 25 July 2026

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare lung disease that only occurs in women. It affects just over one woman in a million. We are a self-help group providing support for patients with LAM and raise money for vital research - it is often difficult to obtain money for research into a rare disease.

Story

I was diagnosed with LAM after the birth of my cheeky twin girls in February 2025. I am in early stages of the disease and still undergoing regular checks to monitor progression. Overall, I am doing well but I have been thrown into a new bubble that is struggling for support and funding of a rare disease.

Firstly - what is LAM?:

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare, progressive lung disease that primarily affects women and causes abnormal growth of smooth muscle-like cells in the lungs, lymphatic system, and kidneys.

It is a relatively "new" disease and is mostly unrecognised by medical professionals - especially in Scotland. The NHS National centre for LAM is based in Nottingham and the recognised treatment to control progression is not routinely available in Scotland. I have set up this fund-raising page to help build donations that will promote support, training, education, as well as to help build evidential research to provide fair treatment nationally.

Who is LAM Action?:

LAM Action provides valuable support to those with LAM and their families and helps fund important research into LAM. As a small charity focused on an extremely rare disease, we are run almost exclusively by volunteers and generate almost all of our income from donations and fundraising.

For those who know me, the diagnosis of this disease is a daunting prospect due to a widely active lifestyle and a future with two busy littles. I have therefore set myself the challenge to enter the Glentanar trail running festival on the 25th July 2026 and complete the 25km route alongside a good friend - all in support of LAM Action.

Any donation would be hugely appreciated. Thank you for the support for myself and all the other woman who are currently living with this disease.

Thank you - K x
