Last year I took on the 24-hour swim relay, and it was honestly one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

Getting into a cold lake, especially in the middle of the night, takes some serious self-talk. There were moments when I questioned why I’d signed up. I wasn’t as fit as I wanted to be and, at times, I genuinely felt like I was swimming along the bottom of the lake!

But every time I got in, I reminded myself why I was there.

I was swimming for Level Water, a charity that gives children with disabilities the opportunity to learn to swim. Knowing that every £15 raised funds a life-changing swimming lesson made every cold, tired lap feel worthwhile.

So… I’m back.

This year I’m fitter, stronger (hopefully!) and heading into it with a completely different mindset. I know what’s coming. I know it’ll hurt. I know there’ll be moments when I’ll want to stay wrapped up by the fire instead of walking back into that cold water.

But I also know the feeling when you climb out after another lap, surrounded by an incredible group of people all there for the same reason. It’s hard to describe, but it’s something I’ll never forget.
