Story
Hi everyone, thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
On the 24th of September I will be running the Berlin Marathon. Having lost my dad to acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) a couple of months ago I will be raising money for Cure Leukaemia.
Cure Leukaemia helps blood cancer patients to access pioneering drug and transplant treatments by funding a network of trial acceleration programmes and specialist research nurses across the UK. Without which, treatments would not run and patients would miss out on potentially lifesaving therapies.
The major issue is that pharmaceutical companies are creating new potentially life-saving drugs at a faster rate than they can currently be tested.
Some of these drugs will never be tested and will simply gather dust behind locked doors. Patients will keep dying of blood cancers whilst the magic bullet to treat their disease is sitting on a scientist’s bench.
One of the trials is the Victor trial which investigates if a new drug used in the treatment of AML can provide as good as the NHS standard of care but without the debilitating long and short term side effects of intensive chemotherapy.
Every 14 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer in the UK making it the 5th most common cancer and the 3rd biggest cancer killer .
In Ireland, blood cancer is the 4th most common cause of cancer-related death in Ireland.
Every day 27 people are newly diagnosed with leukaemia and sadly 13 people lose their lives
As many of you may know I do a fair bit of running but in order to raise awareness I have decided to attempt the Guinness World Record of being the fastest woman to run a marathon dressed as a hospital patient . Yes , this means I will be running through 42.2 km of streets in Berlin in a hospital gown !
Please stay tuned for updates , training progress, events, photos and information!
Every penny raised for Cure Leukaemia helps save lives and also hastens global progress towards the eradication of all forms of blood cancer.
Thank you for all your support!
