Story
WHAT?
I am attempting to swim 21 miles in my local cold-water lido over June and July which is the distance from Calais to Dover.
WHY?
During my eight years working in the refugee sector I have met, worked with and interviewed many people who have been forced to make that treacherous journey across the Channel because of war, conflict or persecution in their own countries. I have been moved and inspired by their courage and tenacity in building a new life in the UK. I've also seen time and time again the difference being welcomed into a community can make.
Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN) provides vital education, advocacy, mentoring, engagement and activities for separated young refugees and asylum seekers aged 16-24 who have arrived in Kent. They provide a safe, positive space and support them to settle, actively contribute to their communities and thrive into adulthood. I've worked with KRAN and know their dedication to the young people they support, how they help them to thrive and the real difference their work makes.
Your support will help KRAN to support over 700 refugees and asylum seeker in Kent this year through education, advocacy, mentoring, activities and the youth engagement team.
HOW?
A swimming marathon is considered to be 6.21 miles so I'll basically be swimming 3.5 marathons in 2 months!
21 miles is 33.8km, 33,800 metres. So I'll need to be swimming around 75 lengths of the 50m pool every week. Please sponsor me - I'm scared!
