Story

Kathleen Mason was an avid fundraiser, on both a local and national level. Through her work within the local community as a volunteer, and her wide network of friends and supporters, she used her larger than life personality and infectious laugh to raise money for cancer charities throughout her life.

Kathleen was integral in establishing the first Charity Shop in Portaferry, and could be always be relied upon to run fundraisers, bake buns, or shake donation buckets. Her unique ability to make connections with young and old, and to light up a room with her charisma, placed her at the heart of her community (and lined her up well to sell you a ballot ticket or two).

Kathleen was never afraid to dress up in an outrageous costume, to make herself the butt of the joke, or to put her head above the parapet in aid of a good cause.

In August 2011 Kathleen became ill while preparing a batch of scones for one of the many community events she supported. Within two days she was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. Two weeks later Kathleen was given her prognosis - six to nine months.

Throughout her illness Kathleen's support for local causes was unwavering, as was her positive outlook. She still attended the Thursday Night Quiz, and even when housebound was entertaining friends and visitors with her quick wit and open door policy. You could be guaranteed a good feed and plenty of craic at Kate Mason's table, whether she was sick or not.

On the 4th May 2012 Kathleen passed away from cancer. Family, friends, and the wider community were heartbroken to see such a force of nature struck down. She was 68 years of age.

We are running the Belfast Marathon Relay on the 4th May 2025, Kathleen's anniversary, in aid of Marie Curie. Their Nurses, Doctors, and Support Workers were integral in providing comfort and hospice over the last three weeks of her life.

Please support us in raising vital funds so that other people in Kathleen’s position, and their families, can have comfort and support in their final days.

This one’s for you, Kate!
