Story

Sunnyside is excited to be joining churches across the country again in hosting the Tearfund Big Quiz Night 2026. This year’s quiz will be in Church on Saturday 21st November 2026, 7.30pm for 7.45pm start, with Katie RS returning for an eighth year as Quizmaster. Amazingly we’ve now raised nearly £5,500 for Tearfund since 2019 through the quizzes. Last year there were 10 teams, totalling 74 people made up of the congregation with their families and friends, house groups, and folks coming together with fellow neighbours on their roads, and our quizzers raised our best amount yet – an incredible £1150 (including gift aid).

The clear winners in 2025 with 43.5, and proving that you don’t need a massive team to win, were ‘Where’s My Parcel? (Hip Hip) (our vicar Rebecca Fardell, Sam, Steve, Alasdair and Anne), who were awarded a sweet cone each. Super 8 (Samson, Su, Pat, Justine, Duncan, Karen, Steve and Hannah) had some sweets to share for coming second place just a point behind (42.5). Last year two teams finished bottom so a tie-break was needed to determine who would be the ultimate loser – Octopus (Judith, James, Richard, Maty, Ian C, Pat C, Peter A and Ian F) ended up being awarded the wooden spoon!

This year will be poignant as we mark a Tearfund Quiz without our lovely regular quizzer Su after her sudden death – if her team choose to participate this year I’m sure they’ll be raising a toast to her during the event, as will I.

The quiz is back up to 10 rounds and eight questions per round. These range from Literary and Film Locations, and Science and Tech 'Odd One Out', to What’s in the Kitchen? and Puzzling Phrases.

Please bring your own drinks and nibbles (including vessels/bowls to put them in) and take any recycling home. We will have hot drinks and cakes available for a cash donation or can donate extra online.

Please talk to your church family and friends about putting together teams of up to eight (sorry no more as it becomes unfair). Participants don’t have to be Sunnysiders. It would be fabulous to get a wide range of attendees – from our congregation (including house groups, gardening group) to hall users, to local businesses and The Rising Sun and The Boat regulars, to parish roads WhatsApp groups and friends from other Berkhamsted Churches, and to neighbours and friends! Solo or smaller numbers welcome and we can put folks together if needed. Samson will be there as ever (he makes me ensure he is available for it!) so do consider bringing similar age and above children too. Please use this online form to sign up.

In previous years Tearfund have suggested a donation of £5 per person. As we’ve said the last couple of years, appreciating that cost of living has increased please consider your own individual circumstances as to what to donate, whether you feel you are able to give more, or indeed please do not let entry donation be a limiting factor as we’d love everyone to feel able to come. Please donate directly to Tearfund: https://www.justgiving.com/page/katie-randall-stratton-9

We will have a game of the always popular heads or tails so bring your pound coins. Sunnysiders and friends who aren’t able to join the quiz please do feel free to donate as well!

We’ll have had Community Cafe in Church earlier in the day so I shouldn’t need help setting up but as previous years hopefully many hands mean light work at the end.

If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with me at katierandallstratton@gmail.com

Look forward to quizzing again with you all…Katie
