The National Literacy Trust aims to create a society in which everyone has the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills that they need to fulfil their own and, ultimately, the nation’s potential.

Story

I’m off to take part in the Arctic Challenge (what!?) 🥶❄️☃️

Anyone who’s spent more than five minutes with me will know I can’t cope with the cold in England, let alone -30 degrees. I’ve also never:

-Been skiing - give me tips please!

-Been dog sledding - big dogs always push me over

-Been ice fishing - or any kind of fishing actually. I don’t even eat fish!

-Won a Swedish quiz - or any pub quiz where I might have half a chance

-Been orienteering - does one year 9 PE lesson count?

-Fire lighting - ok I had a go at a festival many moons ago, but it didn’t go well…

But many of you will also know that I work for the National Literacy Trust, who’s work transforms lives through literacy. We support families in deprived communities, give books to disadvantaged children, support schools in their literacy teaching and help young people to develop the communication skills and confidence to step into further education or work.

Children born into communities with the most serious literacy challenges have some of the lowest life expectancies in England.

7.1 million adults in England can be described as having 'very poor literacy skills.' Adults with poor literacy skills will be locked out of the job market and, as a parent, they won’t be able to support their child’s learning.

Find out more about our work on our website, not before you’ve donated though! 😉

*****

£15.00 enables us to give books to children in deprived areas of the UK. Often, these children will have never owned a book before.

£20.00 could give a child access to resources, programmes and activities that will help them develop the literacy skills they need to succeed in life.

£25.00 helps fund family literacy packs for parents with children on neo-natal wards, helping them to bond with their babies through reading.

£50.00 helps train a volunteer to work with parents with low literacy levels and give them the skills to help develop their child’s literacy and communication skills.
