Lake District Ultra Challenge 2024 · 8 June 2024 ·

The digital industry is experiencing epic growth but there is a talent shortage. Over 130,000 tech jobs are available each year in the UK but students are leaving education without sufficient knowledge and experience to get the job. We want to change this. With Ada, students can learn relevant digital skills to pursue their dream job in tech. We are a unique community which puts computer programming at the heart of everything we do. Our students are the future game changers: challenging the norm, excited by change, and resilient in the face of adversity. We want to remove the glass ceiling for women and individuals from low-income backgrounds in the tech industry. Everyone, from any background, is entitled to a quality education and a better future.

Story

10 years ago I signed up to walk 100k. Those of you who know Maddie's age can work out why I wasn't able to do that then! A decade later and I've finally regathered my strength to take on walking 100k straight (no sleep!) for Ada, the amazing charity I work for. The walk should take around 24 hours in total with some short rest stops for food and to tend to the inevitable blisters. I'm nervous and daunted as many people don't end up making it all the way around but also really excited about taking on this challenge.

I would be so grateful for your support, which will make a huge difference to both my mental state during the walk, knowing I have your backing, but also to the Ada, the National College for Digital Skills. We target our work at those who are underrepresented in the tech industry (girls, and those from low-income and minority ethnic backgrounds) and truly do transform lives. To achieve our mission though, we deliver 700 hours of direct teaching and support to each student over a year, and are funded by the DfE for just 580, so we need to raise the money to fund the 120 extra hours and your support will help us get there and hopefully be able to bring at least 100 new students into the college next year.
