Story
Earlier this summer I went to Cambodia on a student nursing placement with Transform Healthcare Cambodia (THC). I spent time in Battambang Referral Hospital and Roka Community Hospital and saw the amazing work this charity is doing. They focus on training, education, and support for healthcare staff in Cambodia, helping to strengthen a system that was almost destroyed during the Khmer Rouge regime in the late 1970s.
At that time, hospitals were emptied, medical professionals were killed or forced to flee, and healthcare was left in ruins. The effects are still felt today, and access to care is limited, especially in rural areas. Mental health is a huge issue too, with many people living with PTSD and generational trauma.
Working alongside the staff there gave me a new perspective on my career and on the huge inequalities in healthcare across the world. I came home with a deep respect for the Cambodian teams and for what THC is helping them to achieve.
💙 I’ve set myself a target to fund raise to help the work they do!
Money raised will:
- Support Roka Community Hospital with new facilities
- Provide a wheelchair for a young boy in need
- Contribute to THC’s wider mission of improving healthcare and training in Cambodia
ADDITIONAL FUND RAISING
Throughout the summer I have organised tombolas and craft sales which has brought in £80 - you can see the money in the donations.
On Sunday 21st September, Amy, Nikki and I completed the Keswick half marathon (with no training) to continue raising money for the charity. Thank goodness it was for an amazing cause because it got us through the day - it was a challenge but we did it!
On Friday 3rd October, Nikki and I have hosted a tombola at Hartlepool hospital raising an additional £150.
Fellow students are planning on doing the Boxing Day dip as a sponsored challenge to fund raise - unfortunately I’m not around for this however it’s something I’d join in just for fun!
In April 2026, a group of students and staff who attended the June 2025 trip will be completing the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge to continue raising money.
Any additional events / fund raised amounts will be added to this page 🫶🏼
