We believe that everyone has a right to a safe, warm place to call home whilst they receive non-judgemental and unconditional support and advice to address their problems and, when ready, move on into semi-dependent living and ultimately move on to independent living and employment.

Story

Hi!

I’m Keisha and I’m looking to do a skydive to raise money for The Bus Shelter - Dorset.

The Bus Shelter have given me the opportunity to follow the career I want as a support worker, they gave me a chance to follow my dream and after a pretty rocky childhood and I’m so grateful for it.

So it’s the least I can do!

Let me give you a run down..

A lot has happened in the last 7 years, for me to be where I am today and although it’s been hard, I’m finally starting to feel happy and that’s why I want to raise money for The Bus Shelter - Dorset.

At the age of 14 I was taken into care and that situation was made a lot harder as only a few months later I suddenly lost my dad.

Two traumas in quick succession sent me spiralling and I ended up having 5 different foster placements again, in quick succession. Which, as you can imagine this resulted in my physical and mental health deteriorating.

Just as the pandemic hit, I moved into my first supported living house, Sportfit. This is where I realised that although it felt like it, the care system wasn’t against me, they were trying to support me and help me succeed. Sportfit was my inspiration for trying to pursue a career as a support worker.

That takes us up to 18 year old me and getting my own place.

Which wasn’t that easy for me at first but having the support of previous foster carers, an old support worker and support from my family, it made things a lot easier.

With my own space, I felt now was the right time to find a stepping stone into the career I wanted.

That's when I came across The Bus Shelter - Dorset.

I started on a Kickstarter program which meant I was learning on the job and doing a lot of online training alongside.

The Kickstarter placement was only meant to be for 6 months but within 2/3 months my manager Debbie Legg and the CEO Emily McCarron saw the passion I had and offered me a full time position.

I’m still here today, at The Bus Shelter - Dorset, thriving.

I’m helping, guiding and continuing to feel inspired by every new person I meet.

So I am determined for everyone to join me as I take part in this fundraising sky dive to help support as many people I can that may be in a similar position.
