Story
Tuesday 26th March is Purple Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness globally of epilepsy a condition that is caused by electrical disturbances in the brain resulting in seizures of various types. There are over 600,000 people in the UK currently living with epilepsy and not all forms can be controlled by current treatment options, so there's still so much more to be done to support these individuals and improve their standard of living.
Following our daughter Mabel's diagnosis in 2022, we have been very lucky to have been supported by HOPE London an epilepsy charity that provide support and respite to families with children affected by epilepsy. They have given us access to epilepsy specialists both clinical and non-clinical, have supported us by sharing a wealth of information and advice regarding safe sleep and medications as well as sending us an anti-suffocation pillow for Mabel. Therefore, this Purple Day, our family want to give back to HOPE by raising funds to help ensure that their fantastic work can continue by encouraging everyone to wear purple.
A little bit about Mabel
Epilepsy can affect anyone, anytime, anyplace and can change lives in a moment. The day that Mabel was diagnosed our lives were turned upside down and unfortunately we are still navigating our way through this debilitating condition.
Following months of being seizure free Mabel took a turn for the worst and relapsed on the 21st February 2024.
Since then she has had over 80 seizures and spent many days in hospital with medical professionals trying to stabilise her. Following multiple scans, EEGs and blood tests it was confirmed that the starting point of her seizures had changed and she was put on an additional medication. We are still in the process of trying to fully stabilise her and we are hoping that we can find the right medications/dosage soon so that Mabel can resume a normal seizure free life.
Watching your child have an epileptic seizure, whether it is subtle or dramatic is always distressing and upsetting. However, Mabel's resilience and determination not to let this condition rule her life is incredible and we continue to remain positive that we can get this under control.
