Parenthood is challenging, but becoming a parent carer changes everything. When our daughter Lilly was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2020, our family began a journey that tested us in ways we never imagined.
Her diagnosis was a huge shock and had a massive impact on our family life, none more so than on Lilly’s. We quickly became her nurses as well as her Mum and Dad. Watching her daily struggles was incredibly hard, and this was when my own mental health really began to suffer. I struggled for years. I stopped seeing friends and family because putting on a brave face became harder and harder. I developed health anxiety and found myself stressing and worrying over the smallest things, which would quickly spiral out of control. The constant feeling that I was failing my little girl was heartbreaking. Lilly was only eight years old at the time of her diagnosis.
While I struggled, Adam tried his best to keep everything together, proving to be the rock we all needed. Lilly continues to amaze everyone with the mature way she handles her condition, even though some days are still much harder than others.
I first heard about the charity Brave when I was nominated to receive a ‘For You’ box through the post. This small package included thoughtful items that encouraged me to focus on myself for a short while — things like a face mask, a coffee sachet, and a lovely chocolate bar. I received it at a time when I was really struggling, and that little box gave me a much-needed boost.
After following Brave on Instagram, I saw that they organised monthly mindful evenings and decided to attend. Their posts helped me realise how important it was to give myself some time out. Running soon became something I truly enjoyed. I set myself small goals to work towards — running 5km, then 10km, or completing a distance within a certain time. I noticed that my mental health improved so much when I allowed myself that space.
I love everything this charity stands for and have been incredibly grateful to attend so many of their events. I decided to put my love of running to good use and have taken part in several events for Brave, including my first marathon last year! I was so proud to have raised such a fantastic amount of money for this wonderful charity that I’ve decided to push myself again and complete the Brentwood Half Marathon for the second time — but this time, I’ve roped Adam into running it with me! Adam isn’t quite as passionate about running as I am, but he knows how much it has helped me over the years and how proud I am to run for such an amazing cause… even if the training means I have to listen to him moan constantly! 😛
A little bit about Brave…
Brave is a small charity that creates opportunities for parent carers to take time for themselves in order to support their mental health and wellbeing. Brave was created in 2020 by Claire, who was struggling with her own mental health after receiving a third diagnosis for her already medically complex child. She recognised the toll being a parent carer had — and still has — on her mental health, and how vital self-care is during the toughest times.
We are both so proud to be running for Brave and for every parent carer who deserves support, understanding, and time to breathe. Your generosity will help ensure that no parent carer feels alone on their journey — thank you for being part of this.
