Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

Story

On the 8th November 2023, I lost my absolute hero, my Dad, at the young age of 62, as a result of contracting sepsis for the 2nd time in his life. He fell ill on November 5th 2024 and unfortunately by the Wednesday, we had to make the tragic decision to turn off his life support machine after deteriorating rapidly.

Back in 2017, he caught Sepsis for the first time and came back fighting after being given a 1% survival rate. As a result of contracting Sepsis, he developed compartment syndrome and after emergency surgery to save his life, he had permanent severe nerve damage to both legs and one arm and was told he would never walk again. Through sheer courage and determination my Dad was able to walk slightly with the help of crutches again and got to see all his grandchildren into the world who were the light of his life.

Heartbreakingly it was never discovered how he contracted sepsis on both occasions which has left his family with so many questions. Only research will help in getting answers for any families going forward who suffer with sepsis in the future.

My Dad taught me and my siblings so much and we always strived to make him proud and hopefully this skydive with my twin sister will do just that. Or he will be shaking his head up there and think we’re absolutely bat shit crazy which wouldn’t be the first time! 🤣

Anyone who knows me, knows how scared of heights I am and I can’t tell you the size of the knot I have in my stomach that will remain until I am back on firm ground afterwards.

Please donate as much or as little as you can, I will be ever so grateful and hopefully, in the future, we will be able to have more information and more treatment for this awful condition.

All my love,

Kelly

This is for you, Dad! ❤️

Fundraising is at the heart of our fight against sepsis.

It raises awareness, and sparks the question: “What is sepsis? In this way, fundraising can help prevent thousands of deaths & unnecessary suffering through knowledge & awareness of the symptoms.

It also funds our vital support work, Public Awareness, Educating Health Professionals & helping people adjust to life after sepsis through accessing our Support Group network. We also lobby government to support our cause and makes vital changes in areas such as the NHS.
