I’ve been volunteering with Bay Area Girls Rock Camp since 2015 after I participated in adult Rock Camp Boston and it was life-giving in a way I didn’t expect.

I’m raising $1000 for BAGRC because I keep hearing the story: youth show up unsure, and very quickly they’re playing drums, picking up guitars, and writing original songs. Not “someday,” but immediately.

I work with youth for a living and I return to the fact that the brain is an organ that develops from having experiences. Not watching experiences on a screen, but having real, felt experiences. A lot of kids are getting fewer real, shared, physical experiences and more screen time, more isolation. BAGRC is the opposite of that.

Rock Camp is loud, collaborative, (a little chaotic), and very real. And for some youth, it matters more than you’d think.
