Gap Kenya's Fundraiser For Kelvin Mokworo

Grace Thompson is raising money for Gap Kenya
Street children attend our day care centre for food, showers, teaching, love and much more. Those leaving street life are repatriated, or move into foster care to continue their education. Children living on a garbage dump have creche, are taught literacy/numeracy, and play instead of scavenging.

Story

Kelvin’s Story – From Survival to a Future Filled With Possibility

Kelvin’s childhood was marked by hardship. Growing up in a home where he was expected to work instead of attending school, he longed for an education and a chance at a better life. At just 15, overwhelmed and unsupported, he left home and ended up living on the streets of Mombasa. Life there was even harsher—no food, no shelter, no safety, and no hope.

Everything changed when Kelvin found Gao Kenya's Stepping Stones Centre. For the first time, he experienced understanding, care, and the possibility of returning to school. But his journey was far from straightforward. Family instability, poverty, and supporting his mother through mental health struggled prevented him from being able to have an education. Twice his dream of schooling was taken from him.

Despite all this, Kelvin never gave up.

In his most recent engagement with Gap Kenya, the charity was able to place him in a foster home where he finally found stability, encouragement, and the chance to study.

Kelvin started high school in 2021 at age 17 and, against all odds, completed Form 4 in 2025 with a C‑ grade—enough to pursue a college diploma. His dream is to work in Human Resources, helping others find opportunities he once feared he’d never have.

Today, Kelvin is preparing to begin a two‑year HR Diploma at Kenya Coast National Polytechnic. Each module costs around £205, and although we hope for a grant to reduce the fees, he still needs support to make this next step possible. He will remain under the care of the foster home until he completes his studies, continuing to be a positive role model for the younger boys—something he has always loved. He is currently assisting a local plumber to earn a little pocket money in preparation of beginning college, hopefully in May.

Gap Kenya has already supported several young men into higher education and employment, and Kelvin is next in line to build a future he once thought was impossible.

By supporting Kelvin, you’re not just funding a course—you’re helping a young man finally realise a dream he has fought for with extraordinary courage.
