Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

The coast to coast walk has been on my bucket list for sometime and after the events of the past 18 months I thought I had better get a move on.

Most of you will know, I am in recovery from cancer of the tongue and neck.

After surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy which left me unable to walk to the bathroom, never mind across the country, I am getting back to something resembling fitness.

So a date was set, plans were made. The walk will take 13 days, going from west coast to east, from St Bees to Robins Hood Bay, passing through the Lake District, the Penines and the North York Moors, through 3 National Parks. A total of 192 miles.

I will be accompanied by 2 very good friends and walking pals for the duration, with 4 others joining, including my wife Jo for the last 2 days. ( if we get that far )

The reason I have chosen South Bucks Hospice ( Butterfly House )

I went there for my first appointment in March, for lymphedema treatment, I wasn’t really looking forward to it, after a total of 91 visits to 5 different hospitals in the past year.

But Butterfly House was different, nothing like a manic, soulless overworked struggling NHS Hospital, it was calm, relaxed, very welcoming, my first thoughts were, it looks like a private hospital, but no, it’s 95% charity run, recieving only 5% government funding.

They provide a whole range of services for anyone who has been diagnosed with a life-limiting or a life-threatening illness on an out-patient basis to the local community.

This includes lymphedema, physiotherapy, complimentary therapies, counselling, palliative care, counselling as well as a range of activities to help with your well-being – all for free.

I’m still going there and it’s a breath of fresh air. So, it’s personal, a small charity doing amazing work for people with cancer or recovering from cancer.

Thanks for reading this and thank you for your donation, it will give me the support and motivation I’m definitely going to need.
