Story
A year ago, I could barely run 2km. I don’t mean “oh it was hard but I pushed through” - I mean 2km had me questioning my life choices, negotiating with myself mid-run, and Googling “is it normal to feel personally offended by a slight incline?”
Fast forward to now and I’m training for the London Marathon, 26.2 miles that still sounds slightly unreal when I say it out loud (and ever so slightly terrifying).
Alongside training, my day-to-day life is spent managing a dementia care home in Surrey. It’s a job that’s full of warmth, laughter, and really meaningful moments but it also comes with a hard truth: loneliness can be one of the most devastating parts of ageing.
During COVID, that loneliness became impossible to ignore. One of our directors noticed that our service users were becoming increasingly isolated as visits stopped and routines changed overnight. Out of that difficult time, something genuinely positive was created: Adopt a Grandparent.
The idea was simple, but powerful; matching older people with volunteers who can offer friendship and regular connection. A video call and a familiar name popping up again and again, week after week. For someone who may not be able to see family or friends regularly, that consistent human connection can be everything. It’s not “just a chat.” It can be the difference between a day that drags and a day that feels meaningful. It can ease anxiety, lift mood, spark memories, and remind someone that they still matter.
I’ve seen the impact first-hand. I’ve watched people light up when they hear from their volunteer. I’ve seen confidence grow, isolation soften, and residents feel more connected to the world again, especially those who don’t have regular visitors. And what began as a response to a crisis has grown into a nationwide charity, creating connection for older people across the UK.
So this marathon isn’t just about running. It’s about showing up step after step for a cause that I genuinely believe changes lives.
If you’re able to donate, you’ll be helping Adopt a Grandparent continue building friendships that reduce loneliness and bring comfort, joy, and connection to older people who need it most. And if you can’t donate, sharing this page means just as much.
Thank you for supporting me and for supporting a charity that helps older people feel seen, heard, and valued.
