Temwa is a charity supporting communities in Northern Malawi. These communities are very remote, rely mostly on subsistence farming for their food and livelihoods, and their access to quality healthcare and education is very limited. On top of all that, they are incredibly vulnerable to climate change - which means that weather 'events' like the possible El Nino this year will bring widespread disruption to livelihoods and wellbeing.

I've been working for Temwa for almost 2 years now and am amazed at how much we manage on a limited budget (the fundraising challenge is tough in the current environment!). A little goes a long way, with our in-country team working with communities to design and run projects that are top priorities identified by the communities. This includes running pre-schools so young children can get a better start in life, and establishing youth clubs so that sexual and reproductive health can be discussed openly and demystified and rights can be protected and respected.

Temwa is also supporting communities establish tree nurseries (funded through our Carbon Balance Scheme) with thousands of diverse tree species planted every year, helping to regenerate forests, and protect existing ones through forest friendly-livelihoods. And we are also supporting farmers join Farmer Organisations so they can benefit from better market linkages as part of a broader agroecological approach. Our aim is to support communities establish initiatives that don't require Temwa's ongoing support. Its working, and we want to bring the approach to new communities, including in other Districts.

But we do need more support ! Along with others, I'm going on a robust walk along the coast path in North Devon in September. I know I'll enjoy the challenge in its own right, but knowing that it will raise funds for Temwa's projects will give me an extra spring in my step..
