Story
I am taking on the sands on 10th August 2024 to raise vital funds for St John’s Hospice!
St John’s Hospice is a local charity that provides free palliative care to patients with life-shortening conditions. St John’s Hospice has been part of the local community for over 35 years and offers vital services to patients and families throughout the area. Their aim is to ensure that on the journey towards the end of life, they provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
My family has experienced first-hand the wonderful work, care, and support St John’s offers. My mum, Pam, volunteered at St John’s Hospice for six months and always spoke highly of the staff she worked with, the beautiful grounds, and the calming environment for it's patients and families.
A few months after leaving her volunteering job due to ill health, my mum was rushed into hospital and given the shocking diagnosis of terminal cancer. She was moved to the hospice and passed away six days later. The care and dignity she received is something I will forever be grateful for.
To raise much-needed funds for the hospice I am going to tackle the Morecambe sands from Arnside to Grange on the 10th August. I will be joined by my dear friend Louise and a few hundred other walkers who are all raising funds for this wonderful cause. Thankfully the 8 mile walk is expertly guided by the Kings Guide as the bay is renowned for or their quick sands and fast flowing tides.I hope we make it!
If you can spare a couple of pounds, this would be wonderful thank you. It costs nearly £400 per hour to run the hospice, with only around a third of this amount provided by local NHS funding. The remaining two-thirds must be raised through events, community donations, grants, and legacies.
Thank you.
