Story
On the 1st of August 2026, Myself and Ben are taking on a 32 walk to raise funds for ADHD UK
Starting point Whitby, North Yorkshire with the end point being Filey Brigg, North Yorkshire.
This is around a 32 mile walk and consists of dramatic clifftop paths, steep, often muddy descents/ascents.
I have personally never taken on a cross country/walk like this and Ben had back surgery around 2 year ago.
We have chosen to do this as we both love being outdoors and are an adventurous pair and Ben being amazing at route planning and walking leads and will most likely add some added challenges along the way.
Ben and myself are employed as NHS Security Officers, we see first hand the distress that poor mental health and also Neuro Diversity can bring to people.
I have chosen ADHD UK as I am late diagnosed with ADHD combined. I know too well just how ADHD impacts lives and the lives of the people around us and the struggle in everyday life. I am also awaiting an autism assessment.
ADHD UK works hard to help individuals and families with support advice and raising awareness and is constantly working to raise awareness around ADHD in the UK.
Being diagnosed late I had a lot of grief on what my life could have been like if people knew back when I was growing up and I have worked really hard to get to where I am today, but so many have not got the support or awareness around them.
Being a 90s baby there wasn't much awareness around ADHD, this caused me to grow up feeling let's say the odd duckling out, I grew up with low self esteem, feeling like a failure and just completely shut off from everyone else, masking to make friends and to fit in with the crowd this carried on into adult life it wasn't until I was around 28 I watched one of Dr Barkley's videos and I thought he is talking about me and he doesn't even know me.
(Dr Barkley is a renowned American clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist who specialized in ADHD. He is widely regarded as a leading expert on ADHD)
(I could write a book on how ADHD has affected my life and the lives of people around me growing up and one day I might just do that but I want to keep this as sort as possible)
This started a journey that changed my life. I received loads of information from ADHD UK around diagnosis, Right to Choose etc, with this information I was able to get a Right to Choose referral and at the age 30 I was diagnosed ADHD combined and also told I show some autistic traits.
Everything finally made sense with the support that ADHD UK offers. I was able to put things in place to change my life for the better. With no government funding, ADHD UK changes lives.
One of my main goals in life is to spread awareness around ADHD, to stop as many young people growing up lost in life and feeling like a failure, and for them not to have to live with the lasting consequences.
Thank you for reading and any donations will be greatly appreciated.
Please note If you are wanting to join in this is an informal gathering voluntary meet up. It is not professionally organised or insured.
Anyone wanting to join in on the walk they do so at their own risk.
Myself or Ben or the associated charity do not take any responsibility for damages or injury and anyone wanting to join will be asked to sign a simple disclaimer.
Thank you.
Having ADHD or ADD is a challenge - both for the individual and for the people around them. We are here to help people face the challenge. But we want more than just-about-coping. We want to help people to find their unique way and thrive.
We aim to do that through warm hearted support, quality relatable information, campaigning to raise awareness and empathy, advocating for ADHD/ADD politically, fighting for fair NHS & Education resources, and challenging employers to put in adjustments that work and create ADHD/ADD inclusivity.
