One last time into the brink!!
Many will know that some years ago my wife was diagnosed with advanced Cancer but, after undergoing numerous bouts of intensive Chemotherapy both before and after surgery, she was fortunate enough to defy the odds and continues to go from strength to strength.
Maggie's Nottingham has been a great support to Kathryn throughout this whole period. Maggie's complemented the excellent treatment that Kathryn received from the NHS but also gives patients, their families and friends the opportunity to meet others facing similar issues and to address the many effects of a cancer diagnosis especially on our mental health and including the guilt of survival when many around us don’t make it. We are the lucky ones.
So I was looking for another fundraising challenge and I decided to do something quite silly, probably stupid (!) to raise funds for this incredible charity as I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the NHS and Maggie’s who have helped us so much.
I am putting my old body into the brink and undertaking the Scilly Challenge on September2nd
The Scilly Challenge is an epic, staged 15km swimming journey swimming to each of the islands in turn with a short walk across each one to the next starting point.
• St. Mary’s - St Agnes (3 km)
• St. Agnes - Samson (5 km)
• Samson - Bryher (1km)
• Bryher - Tresco (600 m)
• Tresco - St. Martin’s (2.5 km)
• St. Martin’s - St Mary’s (3 km)
A total of 15k / 10 miles in one day in varied open water conditions
Whilst I am sure this will certainly be a challenge for my old body the pain will be small beer to repay these wonderful people in a very small way and I would welcome your support in achieving my fund raising goal . Talking of beer, I have already identified the pub on St Mary’s where I will wash away the salt water with Kathryn after the finish!
Maggie’s centres are located at major NHS cancer hospitals in the UK and abroad. The centres provide free practical emotional and social support to people with Cancer and their family and friends. It costs £590,000 a year to keep one Maggie’s centre open for a year. Maggie’s is a warm and welcoming refuge from the stress of the hospital where visitors can talk to professional experts for information and advice, talk to other people that understand what they are going through or simply find a quiet space to reflect.
