In April 2027, I'll be running the Brighton Marathon to raise money for Switchboard, the UK's LGBTQ+ helpline. The marathon will probably take me somewhere between three and five business days, so if you'd like my suffering to have a purpose, a donation would be hugely appreciated.

I chose Switchboard because, as a queer person, the last few years have felt... heavy. There's been a growing sense that our identities have become something for other people to debate. Even when it doesn't affect us directly, it creates a background hum of anxiety, uncertainty and fear that many LGBTQ+ people carry every day.

I'm under no illusion that my slightly creaky knees are going to solve the world's problems. But if they can help fund a service that makes one frightened, isolated person feel a little less alone, then the training will be worth it.

As a therapist, I also know how much difference it makes when someone feels heard. Sometimes having one person simply say, "You're not alone," can change the course of someone's day, or even their life. Which is why I have chosen to support Switchboard.

You don't have to be LGBTQ+ to believe that everyone deserves someone to talk to when life feels overwhelming.
