The Challenge
The renal service at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, London is one of only seven in London offering inpatient, outpatient and home therapy services for all patients – from those with pre kidney failure all the way to kidney transplants.
In 2016, the renal service at the hospital was forced out of its home in the Knightsbridge Wing as the old building was no longer fit for purpose. This meant there was no option but to urgently relocate the services across the hospital – and the on-site dialysis was moved into a mobile unit – effectively 4 trailers hired and parked in a car park. This reduced the service capacity from 36 patients per day to just 18, with many people now routinely having to attend the hospital throughout the night.
The mobile units are not only an ongoing cost to the hospital, but the cramped conditions, poor access and extended times of work have a significant negative impact on the patient experience and welfare. They also put additional pressure on hospital staff who have to collect supplies from an external storage container and regularly have to work through the night.
Their Vision
"Our hope is to fund a specifically designed space within the Courtyard Clinic capable of treating a greater number of short stay renal patients at any one time, serving a population of 2.6 million from across South West London and Surrey."
