Trekking the Great Wall of China is truly a test of mind over matter. Along the way, I may hit my own mental walls — the inner voices that tell me I can’t go on, that i am not good enough and that I should stop.

As children, many of us begin to build these walls in our minds. With small doors and locks, believing they will protect us and help to keep the ‘baddies’ out. Yet, more often than not, these walls are used to lock ourselves in.

As a volunteer Children and Young People’s Counsellor at Visyon, our role is to walk alongside young people, encouraging and supporting them as they begin to dismantle these walls, unlock their potential, and take control of their own lives.

Visyon is a registered charity that provides free, friendly and inclusive safe spaces across Cheshire East, ensuring vulnerable children aged 11-19 are heard and have access to the information and support they need to talk openly about their mental health experiences. Our team of qualified counsellors and trained wellbeing practitioners deliver early intervention support to prevent mental health issues escalating and having a negative impact on the lives of young people in our community.
