Lancaster students are supporting Teenage Cancer Trust this year by sending a team to take on the Kilimanjaro Trek in 2026! Their fundraising efforts will help make sure no young person faces cancer alone.

Story

The Choose a Challenge team at Lancaster is proudly supporting Teenage Cancer Trust and young people who have cancer by trekking up Kilimanjaro.

I'm taking part in this challenge in memory of my little brother Ben.

Ben had rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of childhood cancer that is very difficult to treat.

Ben was 6 when he was diagnosed and he died when he was 7. I was 12 at the time.

The world is a quieter and more boring place without him and we miss him beyond measure.

Ben loved being cheeky and playing pranks on people. He loved the Beano and became known as Bennis the Menace. He had the biggest most infectious smile of all time.

When Ben was in hospital he missed his friends and wanted to pass smiles to them. He wanted to make sure everyone was happy even while going through quite brutal treatment and horrible side effects himself.

Our family set up a special named fund called Pass The Smile for Ben at the CCLG. We fundraise for research into rhabdomyosarcoma and to change the future for children with cancer.

This is why this challenge is so important to me. I want to make a difference to children and young people with cancer because I've seen first hand what a devastating illness it is.

Teenage Cancer Trust aim to make sure that every young person with cancer has the best treatment, care and support available so cancer doesn't stop them from living their lives or being themselves.

Their units at major NHS cancer hospitals make people feel at home and comfortable, by making it not feel like hospital.

They are working to make sure that teenagers can live their lives to the fullest and happiest whilst providing care and support for their cancer, and keeping them smiling.

Your support will make a huge difference and make a positive change to the lives of young people fighting cancer.
