Story

As a skull base surgeon in Manchester, I spend much of my time caring for patients with vestibular schwannomas and other complex skull base conditions. Over the years, I’ve seen first-hand how important support, reliable information, and ongoing research are for patients and their families. That’s why I’m keen to raise money for two causes that are particularly close to my heart — the British Acoustic Neuroma Association and the Skull Base Foundation.

The British Acoustic Neuroma Association (BANA) provides invaluable support for people diagnosed with vestibular schwannomas. Many patients face hearing loss, balance problems, tinnitus, and sometimes facial weakness, and the charity offers trusted information, peer support, and opportunities to connect with others going through similar experiences. BANA also works to raise awareness and helps patients navigate what can often be a confusing and worrying time.

The Skull Base Foundation focuses on supporting education and research into skull base disease. By promoting training, collaboration, and innovation, it aims to improve treatment and outcomes for patients with complex conditions. It also helps provide educational opportunities for healthcare professionals working in this highly specialised field.

To help support these fantastic organisations, I’ve decided to take on a new challenge: climbing Kilimanjaro. The plan is seven days of trekking, gradually ascending the mountain, and camping along the way. There will be long days of walking, high altitude, and plenty of time spent in a tent — something that will definitely be a new experience for me!

I’m looking forward to the adventure (with a little bit of nervousness about the camping!), but most importantly I’m hoping the climb will raise awareness and much-needed funds for two charities that make a real difference to patients and their families.
