Story

I’m running the London Marathon!

I was fortunate to secure a ballot place and although I didn’t need to fundraise I want to raise a few £££s for the small charity The Phoenix Stroke Club who have been amazing for our lovely mum, who I’m also dedicating this one too.

In 2020 our fun, outgoing, life loving mama suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm with a huge bleed on her brain, completely out of the blue. She was in a coma for about a month and we were told her chances of survival were limited and if she did survive her life would look very different.

Mum spent just shy of a year in hospital, We were in the middle of the pandemic which also meant we couldn’t be with her in the hospital and brain rehab centre for much of that time.

Mum did defy the odds and being the super human lady she is did survive despite having to literally learn to live again (she lost her swallow reflex, mobility, speech and cognitive ability). In the months following her aneurysm we almost lost mum on numerous occasions as she suffered a couple of strokes, fluid on the brain and a nasty bout of Covid. She underwent three operations on her brain.

My mum never gave up and faced the toughest test of resilience I’ve ever seen - she knew that she still had so much to live for.

Although mum now can’t live the independent life she once did she did recover and although has some lasting cognitive issues and her speech never recovered she’s here and still smiling and making us all laugh like she always has.

Due to the above and her mobility being impacted mum can’t go out at all by herself but she does go to the The Phoenix Stroke club once a week which has given her a taste of her independence again. Mums loved the social element of the club and they’ve really helped her with speech therapy to help her communication.

So I’d like to take the opportunity to raise some money for them to say thank you.

My mum is a warrior and if she can get through all of that then she is my inspiration to get through the marathon.

This one’s for you mama!

Xx
