Sitting on the terrace of Kingswood Golf Club in the rolling hills looking out to the Surrey countryside, it is difficult to think of the troubles being suffered elsewhere. Here is an opportunity to help.

On the 5th of May 2012, Jenny Rayner and her family were tragically faced with the impact of mental illness, when their daughter Lucy took her own life aged just 22. The Rayner Family have since admitted that they just weren’t aware enough of the signs and symptoms of mental health to realise the immense pain that Lucy had been experiencing. This tragic event spurred on the Rayner Family to learn about mental health and spread their learnt knowledge within the community to ensure that no family should have to experience the trauma that they had endured.

The Lucy Rayner Foundation offers 6 weeks of free counselling sessions to all young adults aged between 14 and 39 and they pride themselves on working without a waiting list. A number of other counselling services available to children and young adults require a client to wait up to nine months before they are even seen once. The Rayner Family understands that when help is needed, it is often needed immediately. They also run a number of support groups that support people of all ages and run the Surrey Suicide Bereavement Service which can support families directly affected by suicide.

The money donated from Kingswood Golf Club will allow them to continue offering their counselling service to those in need and to work towards minimising the number of people heavily affected by mental health and suicide. In November alone, they received 125 referrals. Delivering six sessions for each of these referrals would cost the charity £18,750.

Every penny of money raised by Kingswood Golf Club will contribute heavily to delivering a better service for our suffering young adults and we look forward to providing as much support as possible.’
