My MND Journey so far !.
So, I was originally diagnosed with MND 5 years ago, but after testing, it was shown to not be.
Unfortunately, there is no specific test for MND it’s a process of elimination, checking for every other neurological condition first, ie Parkinson’s , MS & so on. Once these have been removed, you are then left with a diagnosis of MND. It’s a very frightening and progressive disease, which is different in every individual. My MND mainly affects my walking, balance and ability to speak, which will progress over time. Sadly, this will eventually cause me to be in a wheelchair and bed bound (which i still can’t comprehend ) So, after a couple of years trying to digest my fate, I decided to live my life to the fullest with my gorgeous Wife Ali, who is my rock, my best friend and now my carer along with my wonderful daughter Summer.
Also, let’s not forget the beautiful Soul of our incredible caring dog Betsy Boo, every time I take a fall, she will sit with me patiently waiting for Help.
The help & support of close friends & family loved ones, are often overlooked in these circumstances, their journey is also a difficult one.
I’ve always been Gym obsessed & Car obsessed enjoying every workout.
I’ve now slowed down the gym, as my muscles have weaken, but I still maintain a light workout regime daily .
I’ve lost the ability to walk unaided & my voice is becoming illegible .
Losing the ability to have a fluent conversation, and struggling with certain words, is extremely upsetting and frustrating. I am also now struggling to eat certain foods, which make me choke and is stressful for me, and my wife.
This is the true story of living life with MND.
Mentally, I am now very strong, finding the strength to project manage an extension to our home to create a downstairs bedroom & bathroom, as climbing the stairs is becoming dangerous and difficult.
The MND Association and UCLH have been invaluable in my diagnosis & ongoing care.
The MND Association are currently assisting me with the tools for Voice banking, which will digitally enhance my own voice, allowing me to have a conversation through an iPad or iPhone.
My personal goal is to help individuals less fortunate, who maybe living alone, or feel isolated with MND .
I am also working alongside The Hidden Disability Sunflower 🌻 community, wearing their lanyard to show I have a disability so that the general public are aware when I am out. I noticed that when walking with a shopping trolley in a supermarket, I visually appear on the outside to be fine, but I need extra time to move, so it’s a visual reminder that I have a disability and need some time and patience.
So, to help support me and others on this journey, please come along & give as little or as much as you feel comfortable to help us raise money and awareness, and hopefully one day, there will be a cure for this terrible disease.
Thank you for all your help & time & hopefully see you all on April 4th at 2 pm at Battersea Park London.
