Story

KH Diabetic Clinic.... can you help support our patients?

WHERE CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITIONS FEEL LIKE A DEATH SENTENCE

Living with a chronic health condition can be challenging no matter where in the world you live. In Uganda, being diagnosed with diabetes or hypertension can feel like a death sentence to many. Patients pay for much of their medical care costs and medications, and many simply don't know where to find the money necessary for the ongoing care of chronic health conditions. One-off costs are challenging, but ongoing costs can feel impossible. Many patients have difficult decisions to make on a regular basis - whether to eat food, pay school fees for children or take medications.

FINANCIAL STRUGGLES

Kiwoko Hospital's Diabetic Clinic has been serving patients for over 20 years. The cost per visit depends on what medications a patient is on, whether they have any other health conditions (high blood pressure is common) and if blood tests are needed etc - but is probably £8 - £15 for many patients.

It has been wonderful over the years to have been able to significantly subsidise costs for our patients due to donations to the clinic. Being located in a rural area, many of our patients live on very low wages (less than £1/day), if they can even find work. A significant number of our patients run out of medications regularly, or have not had needed monitoring blood tests done for a long time.

AN EVEN BIGGER CALL FOR HELP

We are very sad that from January 2026 the main donor to the Kiwoko Hospital Diabetic Clinic is withdrawing their support, as their focus has shifted into other areas of healthcare. We thank them for their years of service. Yet, we also need to consider the needs of our patients. Unfortunately, after much discussion, Kiwoko Hospital does not have the funds to provide any further funds to the clinic.

WHAT IS NEEDED?

We have estimated that the average cost for patients will at least double. To maintain costs at what they currently are, we need at least £8,500 to cover the calendar year 2026. Drugs and other costs are rising, so that is probably a conservative estimate. And this does not include any help with blood tests, hypertension medications etc! We are also conscious that these costs will be ongoing, year-on-year.

Thank you for considering helping our patients with diabetes. Perhaps you can't support financially, then please pray! Let us help bear their burdens: "Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2)
