Hi everyone, I'm Kai, a dental student in Valencia. In August, my Nana, my grandfather, passed away. He was, and always will be, my hero.

Nana came to the UK with nothing but the clothes on his back and a dream: to provide for his family and give future generations the best possible life. He grew up in Kisumu, Kenya, and received a very limited formal education. Even so, he won awards for his calligraphy and loved to read. Against the odds, he went on to study at Cardiff University and became a pharmacist, spending his life helping people in his community and beyond.

He taught me and the rest of the family the value of hard work and a good education. Everything I've achieved, including studying dentistry abroad, traces back to the opportunities he fought for.

That's why I'm raising money for Empowering Kids in Kenya. [They provide free early secondary education, meals, and uniforms to vulnerable children in the suburbs of Mombasa, Kenya. Just £10 can feed a child for an entire month!]

Education changed the course of Nana's life, and I want to give other children from near where he came from the same chance.

In his memory, I'm taking on Hyrox (17th October, Valencia): (eight 1km runs, each followed by a gruelling workout station). I'm no athlete, but it feels like the right way to honour a man who never backed down from a challenge.
