Abseiling Whitby viaduct · 15 September 2026

St Gemma's Hospice is a local, independent charity providing the best possible care and support for people in Leeds with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. We support patients and their families, both in the Hospice and in the community, at any stage of their illness.

Story

Many of you know that despite being confident (some would say unbearably cocky) in most aspects of life, I am an absolute coward when it comes to heights.

So, in what can only be described as karma finally collecting its debt, I’ve somehow been bullied into abseiling.

This gives the many people I’ve teased, mocked and generally abused over the years a golden opportunity to sit back and enjoy watching me become a trembling wreck, clinging desperately to a rope while questioning every life decision that brought me to this point.

Thankfully it’s over a river, so when I inevitably fill my pants with fear, I can wash my duds out at the bottom.

If you see me smiling in the photos, please understand it’s not bravery. It’s sheer terror.
