Story

I’m Laura a below the knee amputee with a lust for life!

I was born with a bone disease called fibrous dysplasia and just over 10 years ago I was diagnosed with a rare type of tumour called aggressive fibromatosis.

Following years of surgeries and chemotherapy treatments I opted for amputation in 2021 and I haven’t looked back since.

As a teenager I attended Air Cadets and fell in love with being in the air. For most of my life I have dreamt of flying again and always said becoming a pilot would be my dream job. Something I never thought possible because of my disability and also because of the financial barriers with it being a very expensive hobby.

Last year I learn about Aerobility, an amazing charity who supports disabled people in learning to fly. I was lucky enough to be accepting into their scholarship, which started me on my journey to (hopefully) becoming a pilot.

Because of the amazing support that Aerobility has given me over and because I’m a bit of a daredevil I will be doing a wingwalk in order to raise funds for them to support more people like me in the future.

What is a wingwalk?

It involves climbing up onto the top of a vintage biplane aircraft and being strapped into a harness and staying there for taxi, take off and landing!

I’m super excited to try it out and will no doubt scream the whole way. But I’m sure I will land with a hug grin on my face and hopefully lots of money for the wonderful Aerobility!
