Laura and Bethan are running the Bath Half Marathon in March fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK

It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.

Story

We are running the Bath Half Marathon on the 15th of March 2026 to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer.

In March 2025, our mum, Fiona, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. Although she had not been suffering long with symptoms before going to the GP, it was found to have already spread to her liver. The GP acted quickly, and soon after she started a gruelling 6 months of chemotherapy, followed by radiotherapy. Although this treatment was successful and the tumour in her liver shrunk by 50%, we have recently found out this aggressive cancer has unfortunately now spread. Her cancer is not operable or curable and we have no idea what the future will hold but those that know our mum know that she does not give up without a fight. She is stubborn and headstrong and although there will be tough times ahead as she receives further treatment, she continues to battle this horrible disease, whilst also being an incredible mother, wife, granny and friend.

Despite being the 5th most common cause of cancer death in the UK with roughly 10,500 new cases and over 9,500 deaths annually, pancreatic cancer receives just 3% of the total annual cancer research budget in the UK. It has the lowest survival rate of any common cancer, with less than 7% - 8% of people surviving for 5 years or more. Being able to diagnose earlier is major, as 80% of cases are diagnosed, like our mum, at stage 3 or stage 4.

We’re running the Bath half to do our part in raising money that is urgently needed to improve earlier detection methods and develop new therapies to overcome treatment resistance. Our aim is not to achieve any particular time, but simply to get from start to finish, using our mum’s mentality of taking it a step at a time and never giving up.
