Running Wainwrights Coast to Coast in 7 days · 21 July 2024

We are the only independent charity dedicated to securing the future of National Parks in England and Wales. Our independence from government means we can speak out for Protected Landscapes when no-one else can. Founded in 1936, we bring together a campaigning collective of organisations and individuals from all walks of life united in common cause. Our first campaigns resulted in the creation of our National Parks. Now, inspired by our past, we fight for the future. We want a world where nature and people are thriving in our National Parks, where wildlife is wild and natural beauty is protected for generations to come. Where everyone, no matter their age or background, can access, feel inspired by and fight to protect the future of these truly amazing landscapes. With National Parks at the heart of everything we do: we’re here to unite, inspire and empower everyone to take action.

Story

This summer we (me and Nat) are doing Wainwright’s Coast to Coast. It’s been a bucket list thing for nearly a decade; and after years of planning, a cancelled COVID attempt, and life sticking it’s oar in, it’s finally here… and we actually have to do it now.

The 192 mile trail starts from St Bees in Cumbria, traversing the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and North York Moors National Parks, and finishes in Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire.

Starting on July 21st, the plan is to do it in 7 days, me on foot, and Nat on a combo of foot and two wheels. Over the week, we’ll average just over a marathon a day, with a total elevation gain of approximately 8.8km, the height of Everest.

We would really, really appreciate any donations that you can give to three amazing charities that mean a lot to us (it’s been such a long time coming that we couldn’t just pick one):

- MacMillan Cancer Care

- The British Heart Foundation

- Campaign for National Parks - we go through three of them on this route, and this charity does some amazing work promoting and conserving the beautiful scenery and diverse wildlife that we’re lucky enough to have right on our doorsteps

We are SO LUCKY that we get to do this, but I’m not going to pretend that training hasn’t been really hard! I’ve been running every day of 2024 and we had to really amp it up after the football season finished to fit the miles in. Our biggest training run was doing the 100km Cotswolds Way Ultra over two days on 22nd/23rd June. Have we trained enough since the football season finished? Unsure. But armed with a bulk order of blister plasters and K-tape, what could possible go wrong?

We appreciate every donation so much - it keeps our spirits high as the toenail count becomes low! Obviously feel free to give to the charity you would prefer to, but we’d love it if we can end up with an even split. For those interested in checking in, the plan is to hopefully post a live tracking link each day so you can check that we’re still alive as we go.

Thank you guys, and I promise we won’t ask you for money again for a long while 😉 X.
