Yorkshire 3 Peaks

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition requiring daily insulin injections, blood glucose monitoring, education, and specialist care. Access to type 1 diabetes treatment is even more challenging in less-resourced countries, so we partner with local diabetes clinics to help young people in need.

Story

Miles was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in December 2020, just after his 7th birthday. We are so blessed to live in the UK where our incredible NHS has provided him with fantastic care and technology to support his day to day life.

For a long time Miles has wanted to do something to help others with Diabetes, who don’t have everything that we do here. So he and his Papa are aiming to walk 24 miles, up and down Yorkshire’s three largest peaks, in under 12 hours! This will be the furthest that Miles has ever walked, and will be a huge challenge- not only to manage to complete the walk itself, but to manage his blood sugars along the way.

The charity we are raising money for is Life for a Child- here’s some more information about them.

Life for a Child exists – and will continue to exist – until no child dies of diabetes for want of a timely diagnosis, suitable treatment, or ongoing care.

People with type 1 diabetes are unable to make the hormone insulin, which enables the glucose in our blood to enter our cells and fuel our bodies. Unless they take insulin every day, they will die within weeks. And if access to insulin is limited or unreliable, they could develop lasting complications such as sight damage or kidney failure.

Type 1 diabetes has no known cause and no known cure. But what we do know is that managing it markedly improves lives.

Life for a Child is currently supporting more than 57,700 young people in 48 countries.

We provide essential supplies, including insulin, insulin pens and needles, and blood-glucose monitoring equipment. We produce accessible education materials for children, families and healthcare workers and help to develop the skills of local healthcare professionals. And we undertake research, which helps us – and others – to advocate for positive change.

In all areas, we encourage sustainability by working with already-established clinics and hospitals, as well as some governments. Our ultimate aim is to become redundant. But until then, we’ll stop at nothing to help.
