Story

Hello!

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. It is, of course, October which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Where do I begin? My grandmother used to have a magnet on her fridge that read, “Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making plans.” I learned that hard truth in 2024 . . .

Following a lazy and indulgent Christmas 2023, I found myself writing a list of all the things I was going to accomplish in January. I had great hopes that 2024 would be a healthy and productive year: 1) catch up on emails; 2) prioritise projects at work that languished over the holidays; 3) get up one hour earlier every day to make time for exercise; 4) read more; and 5) make healthier meals at home.

I was ready to tackle that list and conquer 2024, but first . . . first . . . I have to “stop by” Wycombe Hospital for a routine follow up appointment on a breast screening I had in December. At that screening, both the consultant breast specialist and the ultrasound technician were unconcerned and confirmed that the small lump in my right breast was simply another fibrocystic cyst (I’ve had a few of these). But, “to be sure” and “just in case,” they would take a biopsy . . . My follow up appointment on 2nd January was to go over some treatment options . . . simples. . . in and out in 30 minutes or so . . . Back to that magnet on my grandmother's refrigerator...

The small lump in my breast was Stage Zero Ductal Carcinoma In Situ. Caught very early. My treatment (and recovery) was easy, painless and very straight forward. And, the best part is that following surgery and radiotherapy my doctors tell me I had the absolute best possible outcome.

This story has an incredibly happy ending, and whilst 2024 was a very different year for me and my family, every step of the way I felt immense gratitude. I am grateful to the NHS for the world class treatment I received. No waiting times. All free. They even pay for your parking! I am grateful to my job for giving me all the time I needed (with pay) to recover and come back stronger. I am grateful to my loving husband and son who did everything to help me rest, recover, and laugh!

Along the way, I met some very brave women who have a much more difficult journey ahead of them. They are my heros and that is why I am running in support of Breast Cancer Now, a research and support charity that is working hard to create a brighter future for everyone affected by breast cancer.

Whilst 2024 did not get off to the best start, and that list of things to do was quickly abandoned, I'm thrilled to round out 2024 running a half marathon through the beautiful Royal Parks of London!
