Breast Friends and Family support breast cancer patients at St John’s Hospital in Livingston, through diagnosis, treatment and recovery; to provide the little things that make a big difference. Breast Friends and Family has been setup by Hazel, her sister Mandy, mother Sylvia and daughter Holly. Hazel was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2015 which shocked the family but the challenges this diagnosis brought were faced with a steely determination to keep life going as normal and provide Hazel with the support she needed through treatment and recovery. The family realised that patients are supported by a number of cancer charities, each one giving additional support that patients are not even aware that they need. They began fund raising, by dancing, running, walking, knitting, sewing and organising events in support of many cancer charities. Hazel was given lots of support from a local charity based at St John’s Hospital in Livingston. As she recovered she wanted to help and support this local charity so that others like her, having a breast cancer diagnosis, were helped in the way that she was. Sadly this charity is no longer running. Hazel and her family and friends are now determined to make sure that all patients diagnosed with breast cancer at St John’s, are given the kind of help they don’t even realise they need. Providing the little things that make a big difference.

Story

On 7th September 2022, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and life changed forever. During that appointment when I struggled to comprehend what anyone was saying to me, my lovely Breast Care nurse gave me a Breast Friends folder with a notebook and pen in it so that I could write things down. Little did I know then that that purple folder would soon be stuffed with appointment letters and the notebook would be full of my endless lists of questions. It was the start of the amazing support of Breast Friends, a local breast cancer charity set up to support ladies going through breast cancer treatment at St Johns hospital. They paid for my eyebrow tattoos, gave me a handmade wooly hat and head scarf when I lost my hair, mastectomy pillow and bras after surgery, gift voucher at Christmas, a ticket for the Santa tram for Christopher and myself and lots more little things that made a huge difference at such a horrendous time.

So this year on 26th May which is my 42nd birthday, I am running in the Edinburgh marathon relay with my amazing husband, family and friends to try to raise some money for Breast Friends so that they can continue to do the amazing work that they do.

If you can spare a few pounds to allow Breast Friends to continue making the lives of breast cancer patients that little bit easier then I would be forever grateful.
